CARBON GLOSSARY
A clearer language
for carbon.
Eight terms to keep close when reviewing your data.
- Activity data
- A measured activity, such as electricity use in kWh.
At a training ground: the electricity reading for one month, recorded in kWh.
- tCO₂
- Tonnes of CO₂, the unit NoSix uses for every emission figure. Smaller amounts are shown in kgCO₂.
Use the same unit when comparing records: one tonne equals 1,000 kilograms.
- Emission factor
- A value relating an activity to the emissions it produces.
A stadium’s electricity and a team bus’s fuel describe different activities. Read each record in its own context.
- Reporting period
- The dates covered by a set of records or a report.
A season and a calendar year are different periods. Keep their dates explicit.
- Scope 1
- Direct emissions from sources an organisation owns or controls.
For example, fuel burned in a club-owned vehicle or a boiler your organisation controls.
- Scope 2
- Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, steam or cooling.
For example, electricity purchased to power floodlights at the training ground.
- Scope 3
- Other indirect emissions in an organisation’s value chain.
For example, business travel using transport not owned or controlled by the club.
- Source
- The activity or equipment associated with an emission.
For example, stadium heating and training-ground lighting are distinct activities to investigate.
